Fachgebiet: Wirtschaftstheorie In Deutschland: 01.01.2025 - 30.06.2026 Projektbeschreibung des Gastgebers Ufuk Akcigit wird bei seinem Forschungsaufenthalt in Deutschland unter anderem einer Frage auf den Grund gehen, die auch 30 Jahre nach der Wiedervereinigung aktuell ist: Warum besteht zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschland weiterhin eine wirtschaftliche Kluft? „Das Preisgeld von 1,5 Millionen Euro ermöglicht es mir, die Zusammenarbeit mit meinen Kolleginnen und Kollegen am Leibniz-Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung Halle (IWH) zu intensivieren. In drei gemeinsamen Projekten begeben wir uns auf die Suche nach den Ursachen für das unterschiedliche Produktivitätswachstum und die verschiedenen Lebensverhältnisse in Ost und West“, erklärt Preisträger Ufuk Akcigit. Der Professor of Economics an der Universität Chicago ist ein international anerkannter Experte auf dem Gebiet der modernen Wachstumstheorie. In seiner bisherigen Forschung gelang es ihm beispielsweise, starke Zusammenhänge zwischen Innovation und langfristigem Wirtschaftswachstum (in den USA), zwischen Innovation und sozialer Mobilität oder auch zwischen Innovation und Glück nachzuweisen. The outstanding scientific work of F.X. Diebold takes an important position in this merging process because it links theoretical results with his excellent knowledge in the practice of financial markets. Diebold's work includes different areas of stochastics, statistics, macroeconomics and microeconomics. He has written five books and over fifty papers published in outstanding scientific journals. A special emphasis in his work is put on the modelling and prediction of financial time series on different frequency levels. This treatment with dimension flexible and semiparametric procedures establishes a close connection to mathematical statistics. Recent work of Diebold on weather risks are already cited as landmark papers in this new field of research. His leading contributions make use of the toolbox of modern econometrics (unit root test, long memory, regime switching). His work is determining for the macroeconomic analysis of non insurable risks. The spectrum of Diebold's publications proves the whole extent of his econometric and statistical techniques. He handles with great diligence modern procedures of bootstrap and applies them to solve the most difficult questions in multivariate dynamics and macro time series. Diebold is a highly appreciated and much invited keynote speaker. He was honoured recently for his works in the field of research of nonparametric statistics of financial markets with the John-Simon Guggenheim fellowship. The theoretical contributions of Francis X. Diebold on nonparametric statistics are mainly the result of empirical observations. This has led the theoretical and empirical econometric literature to look at the phenomena of long memory and regime switching as independent lines of research. In a paper on long memory and regime switching Diebold proves that both phenomena cooperate in reality. In an analytical investigation he demonstrates that stochastic regime switching can easily be "mistaken" asymptotically with the phenomenon of long memory, as long as only small "contributions" of regime switching occur. With the observation of high-frequency FX data of the EUR and the JPY in comparison to the USD Diebold constructs a model for a multivariate estimator of density. They define the common distribution of the profit of exchange rates as conditional as well as unconditional and receive astonishingly precise principles of scaling laws for temporary applications. This outlined framework is continued in the observation of density forecasts. In contradiction to the "one point prediction" Diebold predicts the whole distribution of, per example, exchange rates. Francis X. Diebold will work during his stay as recipient of the Humboldt Research Award in Germany in cooperation with the C.A.S.E. Centre for Applied Statistics and Economics at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in the field of semiparametric factor analysis in financial markets. It is one of the national economic research centers, the Institute for Economic Research in Halle, which will be his anchor during the stays in Germany as this year's winner of the Konrad Adenauer Award. Through this award, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation honors Dufour's work as a leading macro-econometrician, as a partner in research with Germany and as a concerned academic teacher. After studying mathematics at the undergraduate level (McGill University) and mathematical statistics in a first round of graduate studies (Université de Montréal), Dufour undertook studies in Economics which led to a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1979). In 1979 he continued his career at the Université de Montréal where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1983 and to Full Professor in 1988; he has been holding a Canada Research Chair since 2001. A common thread of Dufour's research activity has been the development of econometric procedures well grounded in statistical theory, with a great emphasis on the development of finite-sample methods to deal with problems for which only large-sample methods are typically available. Wie kann man Nutzen und Preis der individualisierten Medizin in ein gesellschaftlich ausgewogenes Verhältnis bringen? Ariel D. Stern ist eine der wenigen Wissenschaftlerinnen mit weltweiter Strahlkraft in ihrem interdisziplinären Forschungsfeld an der Schnittstelle von Medizin, Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Health Policy, Statistik und Health Care Management. In all diesen Bereichen publiziert sie in wissenschaftlichen Journalen. Sie erschließt innovativ neue Forschungsfelder, indem sie Methoden aus Statistik, Data Science und Ökonometrie auf Gebieten anwendet, wo bisher kaum geforscht wurde. Und sie übersetzt akademische Forschung in die Praxis: Sie liefert nicht nur theoretische Grundlagen und leitet daraus Handlungsempfehlungen ab, sondern bringt auch Akteur*innen zusammen. Außerdem hat sie bereits viel Erfahrung in der Politikberatung. Auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks entwickelte sie politische Positionspapiere und führt den gesellschaftlichen Dialog darüber an, wie zum Beispiel KI-Methoden in den Health-Care-Bereich überführt werden können. An der gemeinsamen Digital Engineering Fakultät der Universität Potsdam und des Hasso-Plattner-Instituts soll Ariel D. Stern als Humboldt-Professorin den Lehrstuhl Digital Health übernehmen. Sie soll eine Lücke zwischen fundierter Theorie und anwendungsorientierter Forschung schließen und im Bereich Digital Health die Fakultät durch interdisziplinäre Vernetzung, Technologietransfer und ihre internationale Einbindung verstärken. Gesundheitsökonomie

Das deutsche Gesundheitswesen ist im Umbruch. Diskutiert wird über Ökonomisierung, Digitalisierung, Strukturreformen, neue gesetzliche Rahmenbedingungen – all das macht ein Ineinandergreifen von Medizin, Gesundheitspolitik und Wirtschaftswissenschaften nötig, will man das Thema nachhaltig bearbeiten. Der medizinisch-technische Fortschritt bringt hohen Nutzen für Patient*innen, aber auch große Herausforderungen für die Gesundheitsökonomie und Politik. Wie muss sich beispielsweise die Gesetzgebung ändern, damit die Entwicklung neuer Medikamente gefördert wird, oder wie muss sie die Digitalisierung des Gesundheitswesens regeln?
