Das menschliche visuelle System ist erstaunlich gut und schnell darin, sehr komplexe physikalische Eigenschaften von Objekten und Oberflächen zu erkennen, wie zum Beispiel deren Glanz oder Rauheit. Wie dies in unseren Gehirnen abläuft ist noch weitgehend unklar, aber es zeichnet sich ab, dass in vielen Fällen wohl visuelle Korrelate dieser Eigenschaften als Schätzwerte für die zu Grunde liegenden physikalischen Prozesse benutzt werden. Frau Dörschner-Boyaci wird in ihrem Projekt die neuronalen Grundlagen der Materialwahrnehmung untersuchen. In früheren Arbeiten hat sie bereits gewinnbringend Computergrafik mit Verhaltensuntersuchungen verknüpft. Ihre Expertise im Bereich der Kernspintomographie gibt ihr die Möglichkeit, theoretische und neuronale Methoden zu vereinen um herauszufinden, welche Information das visuelle System aus den Bildern in der Netzhaut extrahiert, und wie diese Information im Gehirn verarbeitet wird, um lebhafte Eindrücke der Qualität von Materialien zu vermitteln. Starting with the publication of his dissertation on "Audio-visual links in attention" (supervised by Prof. Dr. Jon Driver, now at Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, London), Dr. Charles Spence set the starting point of a re-discovery of research on multisensory processes. This research asks how inputs of different sensory systems (vision, hearing, touch, olfaction, gustation) are integrated to result in a unified percept. Charles Spence has developed a number of experimental paradigms to investigate the major principles of integration between these different sensory modalities ("crossmodal integration"). While he initially mainly used experimental-behavioural techniques to study the role of supramodal features (these are features that all modalities are able to code, e.g., space, motion, time, meaning and numerosity), he has more recently cooperated in projects with research groups in Italy, Spain, Canada, the U.S. and Japan to directly assess brain activity during multisensory processes by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), event-related potentials (ERP), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

The following facts, among others, underline the pioneering and leading role of Charles Spence in multisensory research:
(a) In 1999, Charles Spence organized the first conference on multisensory research in Oxford (the "International Multisensory Research Forum", IMRF) which has since then been taking place annually at varying locations across Europe and the U.S.
(b) Charles Spence has edited two books on multisensory research:
(1) Calvert, Spence & Stein (2004) Handbook on Multisensory processes, MIT Press: Cambridge, MA.
(2) Spence & Driver (2004) Crossmodal space and crossmodal attention, Oxford University Press: Oxford.
These books are currently the leading "dictionaries" and teaching resources for multisensory processes in the cognitive neurosciences.
(c) The amount of Charles Spence's publications in general is tremendous and particularly impressive given his young age of 36 years. Besides the two edited books he has published more than 100 original journal articles in internationally well known, partly high ranking journals, including Science. Moreover, Charles Spence has contributed 24 chapters to compiled volumes.
(d) Charles Spence is among the first who have started to transfer knowledge from basic science on multisensory perception to real life applications like car panel design and multimodal food design.

A striking feature of Charles Spence's publications is that he cites and acknowledges research which is often more than 100 years old and is often not available in English. For example, in his paper on "Multimodal prior entry" (Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 2001) Charles Spence cited Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel, the name-giver of this award because prior entry research investigates the problems originally faced by astronomers.

Charles Spence is currently extending his work on the principles of multisensory interactions (see: http://www.psych.ox.ac.uk/xmodal/ ). For example, during his visit to the University of Hamburg (section: Biological Psychology and Neuropsychology: http://bpn.uni-hamburg.de), made possible through the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel award, he will investigate the role of vision for setting up the processes leading to multisensory integration during childhood development.

Dr. Tse graduated in physics and mathematics in 1984 from Dartmouth College. Afterwards, he spent a year at the University Konstanz, where he studied philosophy. He returned to Harvard to receive his doctoral degree in experimental psychology in 1998. His choice of academic supervisors, Prof. Patrick Cavanagh and Prof. Ken Nakayama, each leading figures in perceptual science and visual cognition, speaks for his dedication to excellence. As a postdoc, he worked in the renowned laboratory of Prof. Miko Logothetis, Max-Planck Institut, Tübingen, from the beginning of 1999 to September 2001. Dr. Tse took up his first professorship at Dartmouth College, where he is currently working in the Faculty of Psychology.
At his young age of 42 years, Dr. Tse enjoys an outstanding international reputation in the areas of perception, visual psychophysics and theoretical modelling. He has recently expanded his expertise to the area of functional neuroimaging. His skills in mathematics put him in an advantageous position to combine methods from cognitive neuroscience and perceptual theory to explore the neural processes underlying our ability to extract object information from noisy scenes.
His discoveries range from new insights into the neural mechanisms underlying object perception, figure-ground segmentation, from-from-motion, and the role of contour curvature in recovering 3D object information from 2D contour cues. Each of these achievements are documented by one or more publications in such international journals as Psychological Review, Psychological Science, Behavioral & Brain Science and Vision Research.
Dr. Tse's publications are always characterized by clarity and creativity. One example of his creativity is the work with Logothetis (Tse and Logothetis, 2002) on extracting figural information from apparent motion sequences. The speed with which the human brain is able to segment figure from ground suggests that his processing occurs prior to the evaluation of object motion. In his 2001 review paper, Dr. Tse develops a theory of role of contour curvature in extracting information about the 3D shape of objects from 2D images. This review is an important theoretical advancement which builds on the tradition set forth in the pioneering work of David Marr in his famous book Vision in 1980.
His research proposal concerns experiments to test his theory of figure-ground segmentation and object recognition. Employing the techniques of functional magnetic resonance imaging, Dr. Tse plans to identify the areas in primary and secondary visual cortex that are involved in the processes of object perception. He plans to explore the role of motion trajectories in the analysis of 3D object form. How is information about the motion of 3D objects integrated into our analysis of object shape? Experiments with stationary and moving targets will be compared to determine the role of contour curvature and motion in the presenting subjects with 2D silhouettes and they are asked to judge the object's 3D form. A further line of research is to employ so-called Glass patterns, repetitive variations of random dots, to explore the neutral mechanisms in regions in the human brain that are sensitive to global patterns of information in noise. This new work is exciting, since it links the scientific areas of perceptual science with neuroimaging.
Dr. Peter Tse will conduct his research at the University of Regensburg, Institute of Psychology. The young neuroscience community at the University of Regensburg will be very welcome to perform his work on either of two MRI scanners (with 1.5 and 3 Tesla field strengths). The city of Regensburg would offer a beautiful historical setting to him and his family and I am convinced that his visit will be marked by both scientific vigour and creative achievement.

Computational Neuroscience

Wie werden Informationen im Gehirn dargestellt, berechnet und genutzt, so dass intelligentes Verhalten möglich ist? Welche neuronalen und rechnerischen Prozesse treten bei verschiedenen psychischen und hirnorganischen Störungen auf? Das sind konkrete Fragen, mit denen Mathematikerin und Neurowissenschaftlerin Angela Yu sich auseinandersetzt. Mit Hilfe eines multidisziplinären Ansatzes, der theoretische und experimentelle Methoden kombiniert, will sie Berechnungsprinzipien wichtiger kognitiver Funktionen – z.B. Sehen, Lernen, Entscheidungsfindung – ermitteln.

Aktuell widmet sich Angela Yu der menschlichen Gesichtserkennung. Methoden des Maschinellen Lernens zeigen bei der Gesichtserkennung, der Identifizierung von Gesichtsausdrücken und der Veränderung von Gesichtsmerkmalen vergleichbare oder sogar bessere Ergebnisse als der Mensch. Allerdings können diese Black-Box-Techniken keine Aussagen dazu treffen, wie das menschliche Hirn Gesichter verarbeitet. Antworten auf diese Frage und ein fundiertes Verständnis für die menschliche Gesichtsverarbeitung möchte Angela Yu mit komplexeren Modellierungen gewinnen.

Die Humboldt-Professur von Angela Yu soll die theoretische und methodische Kernexpertise an der TU Darmstadt stärken und die Integration von KI und Kognitionswissenschaft weiterentwickeln. Darmstadt ist ein bedeutender Knotenpunkt für KI-Forschung in Deutschland: Die Stadt ist Heimat für das von 13 Universitäten getragene Hessische Zentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (hessian.ai). Die TU Darmstadt zielt zudem auf den Aufbau einer umfassenden Forschungskompetenz zur humanzentrierten KI. Am Centre for Cognitive Science der TU Darmstadt werden computergestützte und algorithmische Lösungen für anspruchsvolle KI- und Machine Learning-Probleme entwickelt und die Erkenntnisse aus KI und ML auch für die Psychologie, die Bewegungswissenschaft und die Neurowissenschaften genutzt.
