Mit diesen Grundlagen liefert sie wichtige Erkenntnisse für eine mögliche klinische Anwendung wie der Reparatur von Rückenmarksverletzungen oder neurodegenerativer Erkrankungen, bei denen Entzündungen eine Rolle spielen. Catherina Becker gilt als Pionierin der Regenerationsforschung des Rückenmarks am Zebrafischmodell und hat mir ihrem Nachweis der evolutionären Rolle der Botenstoffe Serotonin und Dopamin einen neuen Ansatz etabliert. Nun will sie ihre Forschung auf die Frage ausweiten, auf welche Art und Weise neben Nervenzellen auch weitere Zelltypen an der Regeneration des Rückenmarks beteiligt sind. Die TU Dresden möchte mit der Gewinnung von Catherina Becker zu einem der Top-Standorte zur klinischen Umsetzung von Forschungsergebnissen im Bereich der Nervenregeneration werden. Mit ihr soll zum einen die methodisch-technologische Breite ausgebaut werden sowie der Brückenschlag zur klinischen Anwendung gelingen. Professor Alfredo Caceres - multiple award winner - is internationally known for his studies of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the development and maintenance of neuronal polarity. A particular focus has been the involvement of microtubules in axon-dendrite formation. Professor Caceres pioneered the use of monoclonal antibodies and antisense oligonucleotides, and of advanced techniques of optical microscopy in Latin America. During his stay in Germany, he will apply his profound knowledge of neuronal differentiation to studies of patient-derived induced pluripotent cells with the aim of elucidating pathological mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's Disease. Ob Mensch, Maus oder Getreide, für die Immunabwehr sind unter anderem Proteine wichtig, die über die Grenzen von Tier- und Pflanzenzellen hinweg sehr ähnlich sind. Wer diese Proteine genau kennt, hat den Schlüssel dazu, ihre Immunabwehr gezielt zu beeinflussen. Jijie Chai ist einer der führenden Wissenschaftler, der den Aufbau solcher Proteine und spezieller Rezeptoren erforscht. Indem er die komplexen Strukturen der Proteine beschreibt, liefert er wichtige Grundlagen für die Bekämpfung von Pflanzenkrankheiten und die Entwicklung von Medikamenten, zum Beispiel gegen Entzündungskrankheiten. Bei seiner Forschung nutzt Chai ein anspruchsvolles, neues Mikroskopieverfahren: die Kryoelektronenmikroskopie. Sie macht es erst möglich, die Strukturen und Rezeptoren solcher Proteine zu sehen und zu analysieren und wird bisher nur an wenigen Forschungsstandorten eingesetzt. Mit den Forschungen von Jijie Chai und der Nutzung solcher neuen Technologien wollen die Universität zu Köln und das Max-Planck-Institut für Pflanzenzüchtungsforschung ihre Forschungen in Medizin, Biochemie und Botanik enger zusammenführen.
