Fachgebiet: Zell- und Entwicklungsbiologie der Pflanzen In Deutschland: 01.12.2019 - 30.11.2024 Projektbeschreibung des Gastgebers Die Aufnahme von Pflanzennährstoffen aus dem Boden durch Wurzeln beruht auf einem Netzwerk von Transportgeweben, das in einer Schutzbarriere namens Endodermis eingeschlossen ist. Es ist seit langem bekannt, dass sie auch Öffnungen in dieser Barriere aufweisen, die als "Durchgangszellen" bezeichnet werden. Die Aufgaben der Durchgangszellen für die Nährstoffversorgung der Pflanze sind bislang jedoch nicht ausreichend untersucht. Während seiner Forschung als Postdoktorand entdeckte Dr. Andersen, wie Durchgangszellen während der Entwicklung entstehen, und stellte fest, dass sie auf den Nährstoffstatus reagieren, indem sie die Transportkapazität erhöhen. Dr. Andersen zielt nun darauf ab, zellspezifische Faktoren zu identifizieren, die die Endodermis definieren und die Bildung von Durchgangszellen regulieren. Damit lassen sich mutmaßliche dynamische Zusammenhänge zwischen Pflanzentransportprozessen und dem Nährstoffstatus einer Pflanze beschreiben. Er wird auch die Hypothese überprüfen, dass Durchgangszellen an der Kommunikation mit bodenbürtigen Mikroben beteiligt sind, die in der Lage sind, eine symbiotische Lebensweise mit der Pflanzenwurzel einzugehen. Seine Arbeiten werden wichtige neue Erkenntnisse darüber liefern, wie Pflanzen physikalische und biologische Signale aus ihrer Umwelt in die Wurzelentwicklung einbeziehen. Die unmittelbare Reaktion von Pflanzen auf solche Einflüsse ist bereits gut erforscht, nicht aber die Anpassung an anhaltenden oder immer wiederkehrenden Stress, obwohl sie in der Natur von großer Bedeutung ist. Pflanzen erinnern sich durchaus an Stresssituationen und reagieren, wenn sich solche Situationen wiederholen. Dabei sind die zugrunde liegenden molekularen Mechanismen noch weitgehend unbekannt. Isabel Bäurle will am „Gedächtnis“ der Arabidopsis (Ackerschmalwand) zeigen, wie Pflanzen auf molekularer Ebene Umwelteinflüsse wie beispielsweise Hitze speichern und wie Pflanzen überhaupt ohne Nervensystem ein zelluläres Gedächtnis entwickeln. Sie erforscht, wie sich dieses Gedächtnis während der Evolution verändert, um Pflanzen anpassungsfähig für verschiedene Lebensräume zu machen. Die erhofften Einsichten sind auch von wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung und könnten neue Ansätze für die Optimierung von Erträgen liefern. Sie wird gesteuert durch regulatorische Proteine, den sogenannten Transkrptionsfaktoren; sie kontrollieren die räumliche und zeitliche Aktivität einer großen Zahl an Genen. Das Ziel der Forschungsarbeiten von Frau Dr. Kaufmann ist die Entschlüsselung der Funktion einer speziellen Familie solcher Regulatoren, genannt MADS-Box-Faktoren. Während Frau Kaufmann ihre bisherigen wegweisenden Arbeiten anhand der Modellpflanze Arabidopsis thaliana (Ackerschmalwand) durchführte, wird sie ihre Untersuchungen nun auch auf zwei nah verwandte Pflanzenarten ausweiten und dabei eine Kombination aus Genom- und Proteom-Techniken, im Verbund mit bioinformatorischen Analysen, einsetzen. His innovative and original approaches in the novel, interdisciplinary field of ''Movement Ecology" lead to new insights about the factors controlling the distribution and diversity of organisms on earth. In his planned research in Germany Prof. Ran Nathan, together with Prof. Florian Jeltsch (Univ. of Potsdam) and Prof. Katrin Böhning-Gaese (Univ. of Mainz), will model and analyse multiple-vector dipersal systems in dynamic and heterogeneous landscapes.
