Zu Berneckers Spezialgebieten zählt insbesondere die Philosophie des Gedächtnisses. Hier gilt er als einer der Wegbereiter einer Renaissance der philosophischen Auseinandersetzung mit Erinnerung. Im Zentrum seiner Arbeiten steht die Frage, was Erinnerung ist. Dabei greift Sven Bernecker auch Ansätze der Kognitionswissenschaften, Psychologie und Soziologie auf. In Köln soll er als Humboldt-Professor ein Zentrum für zeitgenössische Epistemologie und Kantische Tradition gründen und leiten. Zudem bietet sich eine Kooperation mit dem Humboldt-Professor und Philosophen Michael Neil Forster an, der im benachbarten Bonn forscht. Der Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) wird in allen Lebensbereichen immer selbstverständlicher. Je mehr KI wir nutzen, desto größer wird auch die Einsicht, dass es gewisse Standards und Rahmen braucht, damit KI wertebasiert, verantwortungsbewusst und menschenzentriert entwickelt und verwendet wird. Sonst kann es zu Ausgrenzung und Benachteiligung kommen.

Die Erforschung und Anwendung verantwortungsvoller KI ist eine noch sehr junge Disziplin. Und Vincent C. Müller kann durchaus als einer ihrer Pioniere bezeichnet werden. Schon bevor das Thema eine breitere gesellschaftliche Diskussion auslöste, hat er sich mit der Philosophie und Ethik von KI befasst. Dabei genießt er auch bei Computerwissenschaftler*innen einen hervorragenden Ruf: Er ist eine der wenigen Personen außerhalb der Informatik, die als Fellow an das Alan Turing Institute in London berufen wurden. Seine Expertise stellt er auch der Politikberatung zur Verfügung, zum Beispiel als Experte in der Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence, einer globalen Initiative, an der auch Deutschland beteiligt ist und die 2020 zur Förderung der verantwortungsvollen Entwicklung und Nutzung von KI ins Leben gerufen wurde.

Müller eine Brücke zwischen technischem und geisteswissenschaftlichem Know-how schlagen sowie über die Grenzen der Universität hinaus zu Industrie und öffentlicher Verwaltung. Er soll ein neues, internationales und interdisziplinäres Centre for Philosophy and AI Research (PAIR) aufbauen, das zum Knotenpunkt der KI-Philosophie an der FAU werden soll. Auch eine Kooperation mit dem Fraunhofer-Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen in Erlangen ist geplant, um die Entwicklung vertrauenswürdiger KI-Systeme zu unterstützen.

Vincent C. Müller wurde für die Humboldt-Professur ausgewählt und ist derzeit in Berufungsverhandlungen mit der deutschen Universität, die ihn für den Preis nominiert hat. Werden diese erfolgreich abgeschlossen, wird der Preis 2022 verliehen.

Zur Person

Der aus Deutschland stammende Dr. Vincent C. Müller ist seit 2019 Professor in der Philosophy and Ethics-Gruppe der Technischen Universität Eindhoven, Niederlande. 1999 wurde er an der Universität Hamburg promoviert. Danach wurde er zunächst Assistant, dann Associate und schließlich Full Professor am Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Griechenland. Er ist immer wieder Gastwissenschaftler an Universitäten in den USA und Großbritannien (2005-06 in Princeton, 2011-14 in Oxford, seit 2016 in Leeds, seit 2018 Turing Fellow am Alan Turing Institute in London). Außerdem ist er Präsident der EUCognition - European Society for Cognitive Systems und außerdem Vorsitzender der Topic Group „Ethical, Legal and Socio-economic issues“ bei euRobotics, dem internationalen Non-Profit-Verband für Akteure der europäischen Robotik.

Professor Nasrollah Pourjavady is one of today's leading experts on Islamic philosophy and mysticism. Over the last thirty years Pourjavady has maintained a prodigious output of scholarly articles and books in the fields of Islamic mysticism, philosophy and Persian literature. These include in-depth studies, comprehensive surveys, close comparative textual analyses, anthologies, translations from Persian into English, and critical editions of both Arabic and Persian texts. Many of these studies represent original and ground-breaking work in their respective fields. Pourjavady's comprehensive and in-depth surveys have made it possible to view the doctrines of Sufism within the wider context of the development of Islamic thought. One of his greatest contributions to scholarship worldwide in the field of Islamic studies has been his discovery of hitherto unknown but significant manuscripts, which he has made available through publication in either critical or facsimile editions. Professor Pourjavady started his academic education as student of Western and Islamic philosophy in San Francisco and Tehran, and his profound acquaintance with these different philosophical traditions left a very original imprint on his subsequent major field of research on Islamic mysticism and Persian Sufi literature. Among the various schools of Western philosophy, Pourjavady was mostly influenced by the modern German philosophers and their phenomenological approach. In his research on Sufism and Persian poetry, he applies this method to the objects of his investigation. Among different scholars who are in Iran, Nasrollah Pourjavady is representative of the thinkers who revitalize the heritage of Persian poetical literature. Although Pourjavady has a particular interest in love mysticism, the most dynamic and influential movement in the Persian mysticism and its literature, he has contributed more generally to the field of classical Sufism with his studies of lesser known mystics and publication of their works. In addition to his merits as a scholar, his reputation is also due to his contribution as a scholarly publisher in his capacity of founding director of Iran University Press (IUP). Having served in this position for almost 24 years, he was removed from it by elements within the Iranian government earlier this year, to the outrage of a great number of intellectuals and academics in Iran and abroad. Following the Iranian Revolution in 1978/79, the Iranian universities were closed and it was not until four years later that most universities were reopened. Pourjavady took the initiative of founding Iran University Press and invited the now unemployed professors and scholars to join him in the enterprise of composing and translating much needed textbooks for university students in their respective fields. IUP soon developed into an intellectual center for Iranian professors in virtually all academic fields who were accomodated in this newly founded institution. In this way Nasrollah Pourjavady was able to prevent a major brain drain from Iran during the years following the Iranian Revolution. In the last 24 years, Pourjavady has been able to publish over 1200 academic titles, most of which have became the textbooks of universities throughout Iran. More than ten academic journals in different fields (in humanities as well as basic sciences) have been published under his close supervision.

The employment of statistical methods and stochastic thinking in scientific research originated in early 20th century Europe. Prior to 1930, centers of statistical research were located in German cities such as Freiburg, Breslau, Göttingen, and Berlin. Distinguished scholars in these centers-such as Wilhelm Lexis, von Bortkiewicz, von Mises, and Hermann Otto Hirschfeld, later known as H.O. Hartley, -made important contributions to stochastic thought and statistical methodology. The works of Stephen Stigler deal with these figures and their thoughts, exploring and expanding the important scientific advancements achieved in this era. Stephen Stigler has, in the past 20 years, identified the origin and traced the development of important statistical practices. His research covers several topics in the history of stochastics, econometrics, the state lottery, and mathematical statistics. His scientific works include numerous publications and over 50 manuscripts in prominent journals. These writings used sources from the state lottery to investigate the development of the theory of probability between the years 1650 and 1850, thereby casting light upon an important chapter in the history of science. In addition to contributing to an understanding of the development of statistics and stochastics in Germany, Stigler's research has led to a more complete understanding of the emergence of research centers in England and the United States. This research has complemented Stigler's scientific work, which has enhanced the public's comprehension of statistical information and influenced the manner in which statistics are represented by journalists. Due to both his scientific studies and historical investigations, Stigler has become a renowned scholar and a member of highly esteemed international academies and institutes (American Academy of Arts and Sciences, International Statistical Institute). Stigler has also fostered the talents of outstanding doctorial candidates, thereby influencing new researchers who will determine how statistics are practiced in the future. In summary, Stephen Stigler's contributions to the study of statistics and the history of scientific methodology are unrivaled. For both his informative research and his commitment to improving the public's comprehension of statistics, he received the award.
