They occur when huge masses are accelerated, such as when two black holes coalesce. Or during the Big Bang, the echo of which might still be measured in the form of gravitational waves. Albert Einstein inferred their existence more than eighty years ago from his Theory of Relativity but it has never been possible to observe them because they cause only extremely tiny displacements when they arrive at the earth. Indirect proof of gravitational waves by the observation of orbital movement in a binary neutron star system did merit a Nobel Prize in 1993. But the search for means of direct observation continues and has developed into an international race but also a close cooperation. All over the world, mile-long gravitational-wave detectors have been built. These are laser interferometers, capable of measuring changes in distance thousands of times smaller than the size of an atomic nucleus. One installation has resulted from German-British cooperation and is located in Hanover. It is run by the experimental division of the Albert Einstein Institute in Hanover. Yanbei Chen's project, based at the theoretical part of the Albert Einstein Institute in Potsdam, aims at optimising observation technology and thus laying the groundwork for building next-generation detectors which promise to provide objective evidence of gravitational waves. The hitherto dark side of the universe could be perhaps observed and the origins of the entire universe better understood. Jahrestag von Einsteins Relativitätstheorie (ART). Eine der spektakulärsten Voraussagen ist die Existenz von astrophysikalischen Schwarzen Löchern und deren „Kommunikationsschranke“, des sog. Ereignishorizonts. Die ART hat alle Tests im Labor, im Sonnensystem und in Doppelpulsaren mit Bravour bestanden. Mehrere höchst schwierige Beobachtungstests sollen in den nächsten zehn Jahren durchgeführt werden, um herauszufinden, ob die ART auch für die extreme Umgebung des besten Kandidaten des Schwarzen Lochs, der Radioquelle SgrA* im Zentrum der Milchstraße gültig ist. Durch die Simulation der „Akkretionszone“ um das Schwarze Loch herum wird Dr. Dexter in der einzigartigen Lage sein, diese Beobachtungen zu interpretieren und in empfindliche Tests nach der ART umzusetzen. Seine Arbeit, mit der er den komplexen dynamischen Prozessen des relativistischen Plasmas nahe dem Ereignishorizont folgt und den Strahlungstransport zum Beobachter berechnet, ist weltweit führend. Die intergalaktischen Atome lassen sich allerdings nur indirekt nachweisen: dadurch, dass sie selektiv Anteile des Lichts ferner, extrem heller Galaxien absorbieren, so genannter Quasare. Joseph Hennawi gelang es, eine neue Methode zum Auffinden von Paaren solcher Quasare zu entwickeln, also von je zwei Quasaren, die am Himmel zufällig direkt nebeneinander stehen. Er hat außerdem gezeigt, wie sich dieses äußerst seltene Zusammentreffen nutzen lässt, um Informationen über die räumliche Struktur und die physikalischen Eigenschaften des intergalaktischen Gases abzuleiten. Hennawi nutzt die größten Teleskope der Welt, um solche Quasarpaare zu beobachten. Der Vergleich mit Supercomputer-Simulationen verspricht Antworten auf grundlegende Fragen zur kosmischen Geschichte und zur Entstehung von Galaxien, Sternen und Planeten. Catherine Heymans vereint erstklassige Wissenschaft mit hervorragenden Managementfähigkeiten. Sie ist federführend in einer Vielzahl von internationalen Großprojekten in der beobachtenden Astronomie zur Suche nach Dunkler Materie – der Materie also, die existieren muss, die man aber nicht direkt sieht. Um die Dunkle Materie zu erforschen benutzt sie den Gravitationslinseneffekt. Ihre vielzitierten Arbeiten sind dabei von fundamentaler Bedeutung für die Weiterentwicklung des gesamten Forschungsfelds der beobachtenden Kosmologie und Gravitationswellenastronomie. Als noch junge Wissenschaftlerin hat sie bereits viele Auszeichnungen für ihre bahnbrechende Forschung erhalten. Catherine Heymans begann ihre wissenschaftliche Karriere in Edinburgh und schreib ihre Promotion in Oxford zum Thema Weak Gravitational Lensing and Intrinsic Alignments. Nach Forschungsaufenthalten in Deutschland, Kanada und Frankreich kehrte sie wieder nach Edinburgh an ihre Alma Mater zurück. Seit 2016 ist sie dort Professor of Observational Cosmology. Catherine Heymans ist aber nicht nur eine exzellente Forscherin, sondern ist auch auf dem Gebiet der Vermittlung spannender naturwissenschaftlicher Ergebnisse äußerst präsent.
