He publishes in the area of numerics of partial differential equations since almost three decades. His publications are internationally well esteemed. The main focus of his work is the area of adaptive finite-element methods and multigrid solvers. The close connection of theory and practice is a particularly remarkable characteristics of his oeuvre. He has systematically worked on the whole huge area of adaptive finite-element methods and multigrid solvers and given major contributions to a lot of topics there. A unique feature to his work is the practical implementation of the algorithms and approaches developed in his simulation software system PLTMG. This software system which he has been developing continuously for the last 20 years is still maintained by himself. Since PLTMG was the first software of this kind and is publicly available, it is the most wide spread software in this area and the basic sample for all other software which has been developed later. Randolph Bank is the pioneer of this whole area. He developed many of the basic techniques and algorithms in handling adaptive methods. The scientific work of Professor Bank starts with elaborating components and strcutures for adaptive finite element and multigrid methods. He introduces one of the first error estimators for finite element methods. Furthermore, he manages to introduce novel multigrid solvers as the hierarchical basis multigrid method, or certain multigraph methods. He also makes major contributions to the area of algebraic multigrid and finds new approaches for successfully parallelizing these methods. Professor Bank's work has a big impact on application areas. He has made major contributions to the area of semiconductor device simulation, computational fluid mechanics and computational problems in molecular biology. Already in the beginning of his career, he was able to substantially accelerate the computation of memory chips, which was decisive for their timely development. Herr Prof. Dr. Jinchao Xu gehört in seiner Altersstufe zu den bekanntesten Vertretern der Numerischen Mathematik weltweit. Er veröffentlicht seit etwa 20 Jahren vor allem im Bereich der Numerik partieller Differentialgleichungen. Seine Veröffentlichungen werden dabei international hoch geschätzt. Dies wird schon darin deutlich, dass er nach einer Untersuchung der AMSTAT über die Publikationstätigkeit und die Zitathäufigkeit von 1991-2001 im Gebiet der Mathematik zu den am häufigsten zitierten Mathematikern überhaupt gehört. Nach dem Citation Index steht er auf Rang 5 unter allen Mathematikern weltweit. Deutlich wird sein Ansehen auch durch die große Anzahl von renommierten Zeitschriften, deren Mitherausgeber Herr Xu ist. Auch ist er bereits Träger verschiedener Auszeichnungen, wie des Leslie-Fox-Preises oder des ersten Feng-Kang-Preises. Dieses Bild wird abgerundet von der großen Zahl an Einladungen und Gastaufenthalten an renommierten Instituten, die Herr Xu wahrnimmt. Zwar lebt er seit Jahren in den USA, ist aber seiner Heimat China nach wie vor sehr verbunden und wird dort sehr hoch geschätzt. Dies wird u.a. in der Tatsache deutlich, dass er in seiner Heimatuniversität Xiangtan ein Institut leitet und dort Träger der höchsten Auszeichnungen ist. Zentrales Ergebnis seines Schaffens ist die bereits in seiner Dissertation angelegte vereinheitlichende Theorie der Mehrgitter- und Gebietszerlegungsverfahren. Diese Theorie, die beide Verfahrenstypen als Teilraumiterationen klassifizieren kann, ermöglichte einen großen Schritt nach
vorne sowohl in der Konvergenztheorie als auch dem Verständnis von Mehrgitter- als auch von Gebietszerlegungsverfahren. Diese Arbeiten lösten geradezu einen Schub von Arbeiten aus, die auf zahlreiche andere Gebiete hin ausstrahlten. Durch die neue Einsicht war es insbesondere möglich, neue verbesserte Lösungsverfahren einzuführen. Herr Xu hat insbesondere hierzu zahlreiche Beträge geleistet. So kann er in verschiedenen neueren Veröffentlichungen analoge Konzepte für den Beweis der Konvergenz algebraischer Mehrgitterverfahren einführen, einer Verfahrensklasse, die sich den bisherigen Zugängen weitgehend entzieht. Ferner befasst er sich mit Methoden für Eigenwertprobleme, Regularitätsabschätzungen, Fehlerschätzern und optimalen Delaunay-Triangulierungen. All dies kommt zwar mehr aus dem Bereich der Theorie, das grundlegende Verständnis, das durch diese Arbeiten geschaffen wird, hilft aber auch der praktischen Verfahrensentwicklung. Daher interessiert Herr Xu sich für Anwendungen. Dies wird vorrangiges Ziel seines Forschungsaufenthaltes in Deutschland sein
