Dr. Barskiy ist Experte auf dem Gebiet der Kernspinresonanz (NMR) im Null- bis Ultralowfeld (ZULF). Sein Schwerpunkt liegt auf NMR-Spektroskopie und Bildgebung (MRT) mit der Betonung auf Hyperpolarisationstechniken sowie auf der Entwicklung neuartiger NMR-Instrumente. In Berkeley schlug Dr. Barskiy die Untersuchung des ZULF-NMR sich chemisch austauschender Systeme vor und leistete damit Pionierarbeit. Er war derjenige, der zuerst die Bedeutung dieser Forschung im Kontext des biologischen und medizinischen NMR erkannte. Als Sofja Kovalevskaja-Preisträger wird er eine Junior-Forschungsgruppe mit dem Schwerpunkt "Erschwingliche Kernspinresonanz: Hyperpolarisation und Nullfeld-NMR für fortschrittliche bio- und chemische Sensoren" einrichten. Ziel ist es, die Barriere für neue erschwingliche NMR-Technologien zu senken, indem die Grundlagen der Physik und Chemie der Hyperpolarisation des Kernspins untersucht werden und neue Wege zur Detektion von NMR-Signalen ohne Magnetfelder gefunden werden.

Professor Berezovski is an internationally leading researcher in the field of Bioanalytical Chemistry. His research bridges chemistry and biology and aims to understand molecular processes of cancer and immune diseases. Furthermore, Professor Berezovski translates basic findings into new diagnostic tools, for example, to detect virus or bacterial infections. During his stay in Germany, he will continue his research on aptamers, which are also known as “synthetic antibodies”.

Prof. Dr. Joseph Lalah from TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF KENYA (TU-K)

Professor Lalah is well-known for his outstanding research in environmental sciences. He has made important contributions to the characterization, improvement and conservation of the Kenyan environment and the understanding of the fate of environmental pollutants in general as well as under African climatic conditions. He was leading the defense of intoxication of lions followed by the intoxication of vultures and thus avoiding the collapse of the hygiene system in African wildlife ecosystem.

During his stay in Germany he will work on arsenic, mercury and antimony as heavy metals of high toxicological potential, their environmental distribution and speciation in freshwaters in Kenya and their toxicity modeling because no information is available for his country.


Professor Lalah is hosted by Professor Werner Schramm at the Helmholz Zentrum Munich.

Prof. Pawliszyn has pioneered work in sample preparation in the field of analytical chemistry.
Chemical analysis is usually devided in sampling, sample preparation (for instance: extraction, clean-up) and the instrumental analysis. Impressive progress has been made in recent decades in the development of sophisticated instruments which are usually fully outomized and allow the analysis of chemical compounds with ever increasing sensitivity, precision and selectivity.
In contrast sample treatment has been largely neglected and today techniques are used frequently which have been invented 100 years ago. Theses techniques are time-consuming, labour intesive and need large quantities of in part toxic chemicals.
Prof. Pawliszyn has invented several new methods for sample preparation which are very simple, but nevertheless efficient and which can be readily automized. Most remarkable is his invention of solid phase micoextraction, a solvent-free method which uses a tiny polymer coated fibre to extract and concentrate organic compounds from water, air, soil, plant material and other matrices.
This new method facilitates chemical analysis in the lalboratory, but is also very well suited for field analysis, i.e. for the monitoring of air and water in the environment.

Professor Reinhard is a leading international researcher on organic contamination of aquatic systems and their clean-up. He has achieved extraordinary contributions and novel developments in the analysis of the pollutants, in mechanistic studies on natural attenuation, on adsorption to natural groundwater substrates, on catalytic dechlorination and on membrane treatment. In Germany he continues to study the mechanisms and transformations involved in natural and technical treatment of organically polluted water resources.

Professor Rohwer is an internationally highly recognized Analytical Chemist. He is well known for many original contributions in mass spectrometry and advanced separation sciences. Prof. Rohwer always combined the development of analytical technology and instrumentation with applications which are highly relevant for his country. He is cofounder and member of the South African Association for Mass Spectrometry (SAAMS) and the Chromatography subject section of SACI (ChromSA). Within the cooperations he established in Germany, he combined his new chromatographic methods as well as sampling approaches with laser-based mass spectrometry or comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography. He will continue this work in Germany.

Professor Theis is a leading researcher at the forefront of quantum enabled molecular imaging and biosensing approaches. His achievements range from breakthroughs in fundamental spin physics to pioneering advances in hyperpolarized contrast agent design for medical imaging. In Germany, Professor Theis will focus on the development of experimental, theoretical, and computational methods to unravel cognitive and neurological function..
