Rather than in form of an alphabetical list, as familiar from traditional dictionaries, words are integrated into a complex semantical network, which does not only cover the meaning of individual words but also the relations between them. This procedure also allows an elegant analysis of ¿collocations', i.e., compound expressions such as 'to kick the bucket', which are a notorious problem for traditional dictionaries. These expressions are subject of her new project, which will be devoted to German. It is done in cooperation with the ¿Digitale Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache' at the Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Field of Research: German Language (Linguistics) In Germany: 01.07.2012 - 30.06.2013 Host's project description From tally stick to data base What did the German expression, einen blauen Mantel umhängen, mean in the Middle Ages? What is a tally stick, what has it got to do with committing a criminal offence and how does it come about that this term is still used in the same context in modern German? These are the questions being answered by Natalia Filatkina who is investigating the history of such formulaic figures of speech in German. These so-called phraseologisms are, after all, a salient feature of all languages and essential for understanding them. What are the social, historical and cultural phenomena underlying these ancient phraseologisms? What conclusions can be drawn for modern language? So far, there have only been fragmentary investigations in this field. In her pioneering work, which is combining historical philology with the international technologies of markup languages, Natalia Filatkina is preparing an electronic body of texts from the 8th to the 17th centuries and interpreting them according to modern linguistic criteria. In this way, a data base is being created that will bring a part of cultural history nearer not only to an interdisciplinary circle of experts but also to a broad non-academic public and will generate new knowledge for the present day. She has made important contribution to case theory in theoretical linguistics as well as in typology. Professor Kornfilt combines a deep understanding of linguistic structure with a detailed knowledge of particular languages. During her stay in Germany, she will continue her research on partitivity and specificity in Turkic and, more generally, Altaic languages and her investigation of language contact between Turkish and Greek. Field of Research: Romance Languages (Linguistics) In Germany: 01.06.2005 - 31.05.2006 Host's project description Professor Francisco Marcos Marín (University of Texas) is one of the brightest stars in Spanish Linguistics and Hispanic Philology. His leading position is illustrated by an astonishing productivity: author of 32 scientific books, more than 200 articles published all over the world, 7 CD-ROM editions of the medieval corpus of Spanish literature. Since 1983 he has developed a special interest in computational analysis of linguistic and literary data. Today he is well known as a pioneer in the field of "Filología electrónica"; his 800-page volume "Informática y Humanidades" (1994) is universally regarded as the reference book for computational linguistics and philology. The award will allow him to build, in cooperation with the Centre of Historical Spanish Lexicography in Heidelberg directed by Prof. Bodo Müller, an electronic dictionary of the Spanish language of the Middle Ages. She advanced the term "glottopolitics" for a particular articulation of language and politics and offered a lucid hermeneutic model for engaging the ideological dimension of textual production and reception in Latin America and Spain. In Germany, Professor Narvaja de Arnoux will focus her research on the ways in which linguistic knowledge was imparted throughout national secondary education systems in Latin America at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. She also plans to organize the Second Latin American Congress of Glottopolitical Studies in Hanover. His numerous publications revolve around issues such as language history, multilingualism, language education and literary historiography in Pakistan and the northern Indian Subcontinent, and he can be credited with authoring a set of front-ranking works on these topics. He has already received a number of highly esteemed awards for his research and publications output. With his wide linguistic expertise and his high academic standards, Prof. Tariq Rahman ideally represents a tradition of unbiased and critical scholarship in present-day Pakistan. While in Germany, Prof. Rahman intends to work on a comparative project about the ideology of names, as well as on an alternative history of Pakistan (especially as reflected in memoirs, biographies and autobiographies). The members of the South Asia Institute (Heidelberg) will assist him in these studies to the best of their abilities, and are certain to derive much honour and benefit from his presence. She has been developing an approach to verbal meaning, according to which roots come with a kind of ontological categorization, which provides an interface between the grammatical system and the more fully articulated conceptual system. In Germany, she will continue her research on the construction of verb meaning by looking at cases of a root appearing in variable verbal environments, and cases of a root displaying semantic variability independent of the syntactic environment as well as the relationship between roots and conceptual content. Professor Rice has spent the last three decades studying the Dené (Slavey) language of Canada's Northwest Territories, producing an in-depth dictionary of one Dené dialect as well as a grammar that has served as a model for grammars of many other languages. During her stay in Germany, she continues her analysis of the grammar of Aboriginal languages, with a focus on aspectual marking.
