She has also made important contributions on investigating methods to improve the bioavailability of bioactive compounds, as well as waste valorization. In Germany, she intends to focus on the effect of non-thermal novel technologies on the content, bioaccessibility and bioavailability of bioactive compounds in different food matrices and to valorize the by-products of food industry for functional food development. Eaton from the National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA Professor Eaton is a leading international scientist in the study of protein dynamics and aggregation. He has made important contributions to the polymerization process of sickle cell hemoglobin and to the development of single molecule fluorescence spectroscopy for the study protein folding reactions. In Germany, Professor Eaton intends to study the dynamics of very fast protein folding reactions and to compare his experimental results with results from computer simulations. Professor Eaton is hosted by Professor Thomas Kiefhaber at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen in Garching. His first research was centered on hydrodynamic methods, including development of the modern sedimentation equilibrium technique. Later, his interests turned to proteins and nucleic acids. The latter work included participation in the discovery of the element of chromatin structure, the nucleosome. Since several decades his protein studies are still been centered on the structure and function of hemocyanins. Under the AvH Research Award he intends to apply modern kinetics and single-molecule methods to understand the function of these grant molecules exhibiting extremley high cooperativities. Field of Research: Biophysical Chemistry In Germany: 01.07.2015 - 31.12.2015 Host's project description To enable plants to grow towards the light, so-called photo-receptor proteins become active at molecular level. Light guides functions and behaviour in other organisms, too. Optogenetics, a new research field in which scientists like Andreas Möglich seek to influence or control genetically modified cells with the aid of light, takes advantage of this. In this manner, various naturally occurring photoreceptors have already been introduced in foreign organisms. Andreas Möglich aims to examine the function of natural photo-receptors more closely in order to make artificial photo-receptors. These artificial light switches can be employed and made use of in target organisms, for example to control the behaviour of laboratory animals such as worms or fruit-flies without involving any physical contact or to stimulate cells for therapeutic purposes. Field of Research: Biophysical Chemistry In Germany: 01.01.2010 - 31.07.2010 Host's project description Professor Otting is internationally recognized for his outstanding research in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of biological macromolecules. He has made numerous fundamental contributions in using NMR as a tool for studying the three-dimensional structure and dynamics of proteins in solution. He is well-known for the development of experiments for characterizing the hydration shell of proteins and nucleic acids. In recent years, he has developed paramagnetic probes, which are now widely used as efficient tools for studying the structures and dynamics of biological macromolecules. During his stay in Germany, he will further develop these methods and discuss their application with colleagues. He addresses questions about chemical reaction mechanisms in both industrial and biological contexts. He is best known for his contributions to understanding mechanisms of hydrocarbon autoxidation and their inhibition by radical-trapping antioxidants. During his time in Germany, he will explore the role of lipid autoxidation in oxidative cell death and the development of small molecules to subvert it as potential therapeutic agents.
