In her present project, she is going to focus on solid solutions of garnets and carbonates and investigate the local elastic strain field which arises when smaller atoms are replaced by larger atoms. Dr. Gregory Brennecka
Field of Research: Geochemistry (Inorganic, Organic, Biological) In Germany: 01.11.2014 - 31.10.2019 Host's project description Understanding the origin of our solar system, the only planetary system known to harbor life, is a central question of mankind. Dr. Brennecka addresses this question through analyzing Calcium-Aluminium-rich inclusions (CAIs), the oldest solar system solids preserved in primitive meteorites. During his doctoral studies at Arizona State University, Dr. Brennecka developed a new method for precisely dating these inclusions; as a postdoc at Livermore, he found that the isotopic composition of CAIs is different from that of any other solar system material, showing that shortly after its formation, the solar system was polluted by material from a nearby supernova. Dr. Brennecka now will search for evidence in CAIs for the occurrence of supernovae immediately before solar system formation. This work will either prove or disprove the long-held assumption that solar system formation was triggered by a nearby supernova and, as such, will address the fundamental question of our very beginning. He is also a pioneer in using studies of life in extreme earth environments (high pressures, high temperatures) to guide the search for life in other parts of the solar system. For these studies he uses state-of-the-art deep submergence robots and occupied submersibles to make in situ observation and take samples. In Germany, Dr. German will be working on new projects to extend our exploration of the deep sea to remote and previously unsampled areas and on studies of deep sea vents under the Arctic ice. Field of Research: Petrology In Germany: 01.06.2016 - 31.07.2016 Host's project description Professor Gill is internationally renowned for a series of fundamental investigations on the origin and evolution of volcanism at destructive plate boundaries (subduction zones), constructive plate margins (mid-ocean ridges) and within plates (e.g. ocean island volcanic areas such as the Canary and Azores Islands). His 1981 book on "Orogenic Andesites" served as a roadmap for subduction zone research into the 21st century and he has led the application of U-series disequilibria in solving problems in igneous geochemistry, including rates of melt generation, differentiation and magma degassing. During his stay in Germany, Professor Gill will integrate the results from a variety of international projects to benefit our understanding of the forcing functions controlling the composition of magmas at active plate margins. He has designed new experimental methods for measuring the solubility of minerals in fluids at high pressures and temperatures which allowed him to gain important insights into transport processes occurring in the Earth's deep crust and mantle. He also established new thermodynamic models of fluids. During his stay in Bayreuth, he will complement his previous work by spectroscopic studies of the structure and speciation of fluids under extreme conditions. He has performed pioneering analytical work on inclusions in so called super deep diamonds. Professor Nestola is an expert in X-ray diffraction of tiny particles using synchrotron radiation in large scale facilities as well as modern X-ray sources in combination with highly sensitive detectors at in-house instruments. During his stay in Germany, he intends to extend his analytical work to the nanoscopic level applying transmission electron microscopy. Field of Research: Petrology In Germany: 01.07.2018 - 30.09.2018 Host's project description Dr. O'Neill is a worldwide known geochemist and experimental petrologist. He combines, in an almost ideal way, excellent experimental work with very detailed thermodynamic calculations. His goal is to determine the parameters that are required to understand the fundamental processes relevant to the formation and differentation of the Earth and the other planets. He has written several widely cited papers about the structure and composition of the Earth's mantle, the formation of the core of the Earth and about the origin of the Moon. Dr. O'Neill and Professor Palmer are going to write a review paper on the formation of the Earth's core. They are planning, in additon, to do some experiments and calculations relevant to the condensation of Cr to better understand the origin of the first solid that formed in our solar system. Sigman (Princeton University) is a world expert in the growing area of ¿Global Biogeochemical Cycles'. His research aims to elucidate the large scale feedbacks acting on Earth's environment and climate, chemical, physical and biological. He has made major contributions to our understanding of the modern ocean nitrogen cycle and its changes over recent ice age cycles. He has also played a key role in the evolution of hypotheses for the cause of carbon dioxide changes of over these same cycles. In Germany, Sigman will collaborate with Prof. Gerald Haug (GFZ Potsdam) on the measurement of nitrogen isotopes in microfossils from sediment records collected in the low latitude ocean. Through laboratory experiments with living planktonic foraminifera, he has groundtruthed relationships between environmental properties such as temperature, salinity and pH and foraminifera shell geochemistry to reconstruct past environmental conditions and ocean chemistry from the fossil record. His research has produced an array of new tools that have allowed scientists to resolve major changes in Earth's climate system over the last 50 million years. In Germany, he will continue his research, especially with regard to reconstructing the ocean's carbonate system and carbon cycle, in order to more fully link paleoclimatology with predictions of future climate scenarios in a high CO2 world. He has worked on a broad range of topics related to igneous petrology and geochemistry, including granite genesis, sediment provenance, crustal growth, and the origin of continental flood basalt, mid-ocean ridge, ocean island and island arc lavas. He is an international authority on the application of short-lived, uranium-series isotopes to constrain the time scales of magma formation, transport and differentiation, as well as soil production and erosion rates. During his stay in Germany, Professor Tuner will use uranium-series data and other geochemical tools to solve a wide variety of problems related to the timing of magmatic processes and origin of volcanism at the South Atlantic mid-ocean ridge, Kamchatka subduction zone and intraplate volcanic regions, such as the Canary Islands.
