Field of Research: Physics, Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment In Germany: 01.04.2024 - 30.09.2024 Host's project description Dr. Biswas is an internationally very well-known researcher in the field of ecosystem studies and marine biogeochemistry. Her work is an excellent example of the combination of observations and experiments with the aim to better understand the impact of climate change on ocean biological, chemical and physical processes. An outstanding example is her research on the impact of enhanced CO2 levels on the activity of phytoplankton. In Germany, Dr. Biswas intends to investigate the past phytoplankton community composition by analyzing biomarkers and geochemical temperature proxies. This will allow a reconstruction of phytoplankton community shifts and relate them to past climate change. He has contributed pioneering publications on both theoretical and experimental aspects of convective boundary layers and has developed an innovative approach to the description of inversion layers. In the field of urban meteorology he has done work on the dispersion of pollutants within the canopy layer. He has identified circulation patterns and simulated them using numerical models. During his stay at the KlimaCampus Hamburg he plans to work with his German colleagues on the development of Large-Eddy-Simulation (LES) methods and the validation of such models. Professor Fedorovich is hosted by Professor Michael Schatzmann at the Meteorological Institute and by Professor Björn Stevens at the Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg. Field of Research: Atmospheric Chemistry In Germany: 01.02.2004 - 29.02.2004 Host's project description Professor Francisco is an outstanding member of the international Atmospheric Science Community. By using quantum chemical methods he predicted the properties of many short lived species of atmospheric interest. Later he and others detected these species in laboratory experiments and included their behaviour in atmospheric models. Fluorinated ethers are currently under consideration as third generation of alternative halocarbon compounds. However, there is a lack of understanding of the chemistry involving these species. In collaboration with Professor Willner, University of Duisburg (now Wuppertal); a complete picture of their degradation and coupling chemistry will be studied for assessing the long-term environmental impact of these materials of various wide-ranging applications. Keeling from the University of California, San Diego, USA Professor Ralph Keeling is one of the worldwide experts in the area of atmospheric gases, in particular oxygen. His pioneering initiation and development of atmospheric oxygen time-series opened up new ways to understand the balances of carbon sources and sinks on the planet, particularly for understanding ocean versus terrestrial sinks of fossil-fuel CO2. In Germany, Professor Keeling will work in close cooperation with marine scientists from the cluster of excellence "Future Ocean" and the SFB 754 "Climate-Biogeochemistry Interactions in the Tropical Ocean" on changes in dissolved oxygen in the ocean. Professor Keeling is hosted by Professor Martin Visbeck and Professor Douglas Wallace at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at the Christian-Albrechts Universität zu Kiel. Her research explains the expected poleward shift of extra-tropical storms with warming, how this shift is influenced by the retreat of sea-ice, and more generally, how the spatial structure of warming can be constrained by knowledge of the present-day climate. During her stay in Germany, Professor Shaw will extend her work on the response of the extra-tropical storm-tracks to include factors influencing their inter-hemispheric asymmetry.
