Field of Research: Electrical Semiconductors, Components, Circuits, Systems In Germany: 01.03.2002 - 28.02.2003 Host's project description In 1966 Professor Robert Bower presented the Self-Aligned Gate MOSFET (SAG) that overcame performance, design predictability and scalability problems of the early method of making MOSFETs. This concept allowed the MOSFET to be made as close to theoretical performance limits as possible and eliminate the design unpredictability of the early device. The Self-Aligned Gate MOSFET is currently the most replicated structure on earth. Today, millions to tens of millons of these field effect devices are incorporated into each semiconductor chip. These cips are now contained in virtually everything used in our lives. For these outstanding contributions made to the area of semiconductors-related devices, Professor Bower was elected to the National Inventors Hall of Fame. In the same year he received the Ronald H. Brown American Innovator Award. Since 1999 he is laso a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Professor Bower's research at Technical University of Berlin will be focusing on 3-dimensional smart MEMS devices. Field of Research: Communication and High-Frequency Technology, Theoretical Electrical Engineering In Germany: 01.05.2005 - 31.07.2005 Host's project description Professor Dan Costello, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA has been nominated by Professor Joachim Hagenauer, TUM München for a joint research project which aims to approach the ultimate limit of information transmission the so-called Shannon limit. The awardee has spent two longer and several shorter visits at TU München and is currently teaching an advanced course in TUM`s international program. Professor Costello is one of the leading coding theorists in the world. His book "Error Control Coding" is the most cited research monograph in the field reflecting his more than 250 publications. He has held visiting research positions at the "IBM Forschungslabor Zürich" and at ETH Zürich. He is a Fellow and Past President of the "Information Theory Society" of the "Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)". His research is funded over many years by the "National Science Foundation" and by NASA where he contributed to deep space communications. Since the foundation of information theory 50 years ago the theory and practice of error correcting codes has made dramatic progress. In mobile and satellite communications it is a key element in the transmission chain. In 1993 in a breakthrough decoding product codes has been proposed with iterative ('turbo') decoding. Even though very simple component codes are applied, the 'turbo' coding scheme is able to achieve a performance rather close to Shannon's bound leading to a minimal energy per bit. Professor Costello as well as his host contributed to this new field of error correcting and extended it to other communications areas. Interdisciplinarity between materials science, optics, electrical engineering and deep understanding of all these areas characterizes his work. He invented spatial modulation, a new and revolutionary modulation format for wireless communication systems, and he pioneered visible light communication systems. Specifically, he has investigated the use of solar cells as photo detectors, the use of intelligent reconfigurable surfaces for wireless radio and visible light communications, and has further made important advances in achieving higher and higher data rates using MIMO technology in visible light communications. His work on LiFi optical wireless became known to a broader public through two TED talks. In Germany, he will continue his groundbreaking work towards Terabit free space optical communications. His groundbreaking work has defined important major research directions in these areas and has a deep and lasting impact on the field. This is especially true for his research on adaptive filters, multiuser detection, digital subscriber lines, wireless transmission techniques, and resource allocation in wireless networks. Presently, Professor Honig's scientific interests are focused on the following areas of research: 1. "Information exchange in multi-antenna wireless networks" and, 2. "Optimal resource allocation in wireless communication networks" Both topics belong to the most current fields of research in the area of wireless communication. The first topic particularly, Information Exchange in Multi-Antenna Wireless Networks, has quickly gained influence and special meaning in the neighboring discipline of automatic control technology. Field of Research: Electrical Semiconductors, Components, Circuits, Systems In Germany: 01.08.2013 - 31.08.2013 Host's project description Professor Kuech has been one of the world leaders in the application of metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy to electronic devices over the last 25 years. His distinguished career has just been highlighted by his election to become a member of the US National Academy of Engineering. He began his career as a scientist at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, where he was instrumental in moving the technology for field-effect transistors away from ion-implantation based to epitaxy-based through his both fundamental and applied research in epitaxial growth. His contributions both at IBM and at the University of Wisconsin span a wealth of materials and their associated applications. He has worked on oxides and organic and inorganic semiconductors, looking at bulk as well as surface phenomena, and applications from fuel cells to high speed electronics and optoelectronics. His work is characterized by an understanding of the basic physics and chemistry of the synthesis process which is then used advantageously to produce materials and structures of high technological interest. Through his wide-ranging academic work he has established himself as a leader in both the crystal-growth community and in the general materials science community. He has received a number of distinctions in terms of professional society awards and named lectureships. Reflecting his eminent role in the field, he acts as the principal editor of the Journal of Crystal Growth. During his stay in Germany, he will follow surface chemistry studies and work on fundamental aspects of compound semiconductor growth, in particular at the Berliner Elektronenspeicherring-Gesellschaft für Synchrotronstrahlung (BESSY) using the beamline of one of the hosting groups (PDI). More recently, she has been working on non-linear high efficiency amplifiers for microwave wireless communications. She obtained extremely high operating efficiency in these amplifier configurations.
