He has made important contributions to modeling the linkages between human behavioural dynamics, activity-travel choices, transportation systems and built environments. Professor Bhat has also been a pioneer in the formulation and use of analytic methods, for example a new simulation approach to estimate choice models, or an elegant model for buying multiple products simultaneously. In Germany, he continues his research on the further development of choice models, such as estimating them from aggregate measurements, dealing with a large number of alternatives or including social interactions. Adaptive flight control is a safety-enhancing technology. Until recently, however, it could not be used in certified aircraft due to the absence of possibilities to guarantee stability of the existing approaches. L1 control theory developed by Professor Hovakimyan has successfully addressed that issue. It is a breakthrough innovation that has been followed by a large research community world-wide. During her stay in Germany, Professor Hovakimyan plans to demonstrate L1 in real flight on the unique manned research aircraft of the Institute of Flight System Dynamics at the Technical University of Munich. In particular, he plays an outstanding role to apply the Object-Oriented paradigm in the industrial applications of real-time control. He has developed scientific methodologies and experimental tools to advance the fundamental knowledge in integrated control and mechanical behavior issues in e-maintenance engineering. In addition, he substantially contributed to interdisciplinary issues in dealing with analytical description of mechanical behaviors and machine failure prediction using analytical, numerical and experimental techniques. During his stays in Germany, Prof. Pereira will advance research on Cyber Physical Systems. This is a research area of highest relevance for both, Germany as a heavily export-oriented country and Brazil which emerges as the leading technology nation in South America. Field of Research: Air and Space Traffic and Transport In Germany: 01.06.2007 - 31.01.2008 Host's project description Professor Schonberg has made outstanding contributions to the areas of shock physics, hypervelocity impact, and penetration mechanics. The main field of application of his work is that of designing spacecraft protection shields against hypervelocity impacts of space debris, that have helped making manned space missions safer. He has performed various pioneer studies including the merits of using different metallic and non-metallic materials in multi-wall structural systems for earth-orbiting spacecraft, the vibrational motions induced by a perforating orbital debris impact and the effects of existing spacecraft structural loads on impact-induced damage. In Germany, he will investigate the physical and mechanical processes that occur during hypervelocity impacts on structure walls with special focus on energy partitioning into elastic, plastic, fracture, and other dissipative processes.
