His recent research is focused on the understanding of basic principles that control mechanical properties and behaviours of materials in both engineering and biology. His group studies how metallic and semiconductor materials behave in thin film and nanocrystalline forms, and how biological materials such as bone, gecko and cell achieve their mechanical robustness through structural hierarchy. During his stay in Germany, Professor Gao will study the behaviour of cells in contact with natural and synthetic interfaces. These theoretical considerations led to a completely new outlook on the analysis and design of engineering structures under stochastic excitation, such as wind and earthquake conditions. In a joint research project these findings should be expanded where the further development of the procedures of Equivalent Linearization and advanced Monte Carlo Simulation are in the focus of interest. He has made outstanding contributions in the field of finite element technology, a numerical method which allows to model engineering processes and systems. He belongs to the pioneers of the famous Smoothed Finite Element Method (SFEM) which significantly improves the accuracy and efficiency of finite element formulations. In Germany, he intends to develop new formulations for the modeling of complex material behavior. One key objective is the design of smart and tailor-made materials. His research encompasses ultrasonic scattering to characterize the microstructure of materials. Professor Turner described the diffusion of elastic waves in the strong scattering regime and developed dynamic methods in atomic force microscope and in nanoindentation to map the elastic and the anelastic behavior of heterogeneous materials with nanometer resolution.
