Field of Research: Political Science In Germany: 01.09.2021 - Host's project description To what extent do constitutional courts in different countries around the world exert political influence? What role do they play in old and young democracies, or in secular and theocratic states where they compete with religious law? Ran Hirschl is one of the world’s leading scholars of comparative constitutional law. Having completed numerous studies on constitutional development, the judicialization of politics, and the intellectual history and methodologies of comparative public law, Hirschl now wants to focus on settings in which religion and constitutional law interact to reflect and shape political struggles over collective identity. He also plans to explore new challenges concerning the constitutional governance of mega-cities in an increasingly globalized world. Hirschl will help to develop the Göttingen campus into a centre for research on the interaction between comparative law, constitutional design and comparative politics. To this end, he will cooperate extensively with the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen. Field of Research: Political Science In Germany: 01.04.2024 - Host's project description Anke Hoeffler is one of the most frequently-cited social scientists in the world. An economist and political scientist, her research focuses on violence, conflict and civil wars as well as their economic consequences. A study she was involved in on the economic impact of violence and armed conflict attracted considerable interest. It reveals that domestic violence is responsible for the highest costs worldwide – fifty times higher than the financial losses caused by civil wars. Thus, domestic violence, a form of violence that has received relatively little attention to date, emerges as the most expensive one. A significant contribution to academic and public debate has also been made by the “greed and grievance” approach which Anke Hoeffler developed with the British migration researcher Paul Collier: they investigated whether civil wars were mainly caused by people suffering political oppression, for example, or for religious or ideological reasons, or to what extent economic aspects such as advantageous financing favoured rebellion. In her role as a Humboldt Professor, Anke Hoeffler will reinforce conflict and development research at the University of Konstanz where she will be the hub of a proposed centre for “Conflict Research and Development Policy”. Research is envisaged on topics like the situation in Liberia and the treatment of Syrian refugees in Jordan. As principal investigator of large-scale Canadian and American election studies he developed the so-called “Rolling Cross Section” research design (RCS), which brought a major breakthrough to this area of research. He published several landmark studies which effectively shattered the dominant 'minimal effects' consensus on the role of campaigns for election outcomes. During his stay in Germany, Professor Johnston aims to capitalize on the RCS studies conducted in many democracies by embarking on a cross-temporal and cross-country comparative exploration of campaign effects. Field of Research: Political Science In Germany: 01.10.2017 - 31.08.2018 Host's project description The "Arab Spring" has demonstrated again that democratic revolutions can be unleashed in seemingly stable authoritarian states. Many observer contend in this context that modern communcation technologies, in particular the Internet, are helpful in fostering democratization and pacification of societies. One causal mechanism that has been proposed to understand these processes sees the Internet as an alternative platform for group members to communicate outside their group. This possbilitty reduces ethnic mobilization, but improves inter-ethnic attitudes. However, modern communication technology also facilitates collective action, therby aggravating the problem of ethnic strife. We do, at the moment, not know which of these effects is stronger. Dr Weidmann proposes a highly innovative empirical research strategy to evaluate how beneficial modern communication technologies really are. His research team hopes to establish with cutting-edge methods from Computer Science how large the mobilized groups are in mass demonstrations; neither the government nor the opposition provide accurate information about these mobilizations. The Weidmann group will also examine trough a field experiment to be conducted in Bosnia how the internet transforms inter-ethnic attitudes. A final study will address the question whether Internet coverage of an event accelerates the spread of information within a network.
